Whether it’s jumping for joy, the insides of a mattress or the first day of…Summit Artspace Gallery is asking area artists to think spring when creating works for its 2012 Fresh Art show. This time titled Fresh & Springy, the annual exhibition calls on artists to stretch their creative muscles and work in novel styles, new directions and unusual materials. Selected works will be displayed from March 9 through April 14.
“Artists are invited to embrace the theme and allow their ideas to flow and grow – or leap and cavort,” said gallery coordinator Joan Colbert. “Springy can be bouncy, resilient and fresh – literally or figuratively.”
This is the eighth Summit Artspace Fresh Art juried show, which is open to artists who live, work or attend universities in Summit, Portage and Medina Counties. It attracts unique works in a wide variety of media by emerging young artists and established art professionals. Guest judges – Deborah Pinter and Leandra Drumm – will select the works to be displayed. Pinter is an artist and executive director of the Orange Art Center, and Drumm is an artist/craftsmen well-known for her works in metal and glass.
The judges will also select three top winners to be awarded cash prizes of $500, $300 and $200. For the fourth year Summa Foundation is the Fresh Art prize sponsor.
Submissions will be accepted on Thursday, March 1 from noon to 7 pm at Summit Artspace, 140 E. Market Street in Downtown Akron. Only one entry is allowed per person, and there is a $10 entry fee. Download the application Fresh Art 2012 Entry Form or call 330-376-8480 to receive one via mail.
Prize winners will be announced at a special public reception on Friday, March 9 from 5 to 7 pm. Summit Artspace is a project of the Akron Area Arts Alliance in partnership with Summit County government. It is located in a historic building at 140 E. Market St., one block east of the Akron Art Museum. The gallery is supported by the Akron Community Foundation and Ohio Arts Council.
